I attended the University of Maryland from 1976 to 1978 (as a transfer student) and was very involved in both the student "broadcast" radio station, WMUC (carrier current) and the Amateur Radio Club, W3EAX. Judging by the signature I guess I was also the Secretary and Treasurer. Gee, I had forgotten that.... Anyway, here are some pictures of the ham club in action.
From left to right: Dave WB2HTO; Ken WA3WHE, and Mike WA3WDO. Rick WA3UOO is taking the picture of Paul WA3VJB, who took this shot. W3EAX was running communications for a Fraternity/Sorority charity event. Note first the club T-shirts, which I doubt any of us can fit into anymore. And the high-tech handhelds, especially the one Mike is holding...
W3EAX/3, broadcasting in front of the Student Union Building as part of a public relations plan to let UMD students know about ham radio. There's Dave, WB2HTO and Rick, WA3UOO working the world. Note the informational board we created for the event on the left.
That's Rick, WA3UOO (now K8SV) and WA3SXH and George, WB3EMQ. If you look at the previous picture you'll see the front of a car on the right. The 20-meter mobile antenna. on Dave's car (you can see the front hood in the left background) was used for the demo.
Now a classic story from the club. It's 1977. Gotta paint the tower, but no one had a ladder. No problem. I volunteered my car, drove it into the backyard, covered it with a tarp, and did the job. Uh oh. Problem. That spring Maryland mud. Dave's car got stuck and we had to call a tow-truck tp pull it out. (That's Mike, WA3WDO with me)
